Overview**TW/CW Suicide** At the Filipino Mental Health Initiative of San Francisco, we are committed to building community capacity by creating access to culturally appropriate behavioral health services & mental health education programs to the Filipino and Filipina/o/x American community in San Francisco. FMHI-SF is proud to announce the return of our Mental Health First Aid Training Scholarship Program, sponsored by Success Centers. In honor of September's Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, FMHI-SF will offer scholarships to community members interested in Mental Health First Aid certification. Scholarships will cover training fees in Youth Mental Health First Aid, Adult Mental Health First Aid, and Mental Health First Aid Instructor courses. Applicants working or living in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood will be prioritized. BIPOC youth workers, organizational leaders, caregivers, and parents are strongly encouraged to apply. What is Mental Health First Aid?Nearly one in five U.S. adults lives with a mental illness (44.7 million in 2016). (National Institute of Mental Health via the National Survey on Drug Use and Health and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. In 2016, an estimated 10.4 million adults (4.2 percent) in the U.S. had a serious mental illness (SMI). (National Institute of Mental Health via the National Survey on Drug Use and Health and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
Similar to 'First Aid' and CPR, 'Mental Health First Aid' teaches individuals to help those experiencing mental health challenges or crises. Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based training course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. This training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.
