About the Program

buô: wholeness; loob: inner self

Established in 2019, the Buong Loob: Filipinx Student Wellness Internship (also referred to as Buong Loob) provides Filipina/o/x and Filipina/o/x American identified high school students (grades 10th/11th/12th) opportunities to learn about mental health and wellbeing within the context of their ethnic and socio-cultural experiences. Buong Loob Interns participate in a semester-long paid internship, consisting of weekly mental health education workshops, job talks with professionals in the sectors of behavioral health, public health, & holistic medicine, while conducting independent fieldwork assignments related to mental wellness in San Francisco's Filipinx student community. In addition, Buong Loob interns engage in multiple service-learning projects such as organizing our annual “Buong Loob: Filipinx Student Wellbeing Conference” and work with middle school students as mentors to offer advice in navigating middle school life.

Student Testimonials

"This internship made me no longer afraid of mental health. I've always seen mental health as a sort of bad thing partially being because of the stigma that accompanies it but also because of my own experiences with mental health. But ever since joining this internship, it helped me realize that mental health is more complex than it is complicated. Especially the mental health of Filipinxs or folks of color in general. Our mental health has been affected since the very first day we were exposed to the world. We inherit so many of our past generations' way of thought and feeling. And I feel like, things like this make it so that we have to put in so much work and effort to not only understand our own mental health, but to tend to and make progress in our healing and wellness journey." -Buong Loob Intern (2022)
"I thought that mental health in the Filipinx community was non-existent. I didn't believe that I was affected, and when I discovered that it exists and studied about our cultural values in this program, I thought that they were one sided, that they were always negative, which is not true. We can use cultural values like hiya, utang na loob to help solve mental health issues in the Filipinx community." -Buong Loob Intern (2022)
[Buong Loob] made me understand and really think about the dynamics in my own family and how our generations have changed. Ultimately, mental health is that much more important BECAUSE we are Filipino." -Buong Loob Intern (2022)

"A lil wholesome video which entails specific things people around us do that we appreciate. ;) We hope this provides an idea of what things adults can do to help us or show that we're cared for, in everyday life.  It also pinpoints things adults may not realize is very important to us in feeling loved, heard, supported, and comforted." -Filipinx Student Wellness Interns 2021

Program Overview

"The "Filipinx Student Wellbeing Conference" is an annual youth-led, mental health education event organized by a YOUTH CONTINGENCY composed of past and present Buong Loob: Filipinx Student Wellness Internship interns.

In this paid, semester-long internship, Filipinx Student Wellbeing Conference: Youth Contingency leaders engage in various project-based learning activities to determine the wellness needs of SFUSD's Filipino & Filipina/o/x American high school population and create humanizing learning spaces in the form of a conference. We aim to create opportunities for Filipina/o/x and Filipina/o/x American identified high schoolers to discuss topics related to Filipinx cultural values, identity, and mental health stigma while centering the student experience.

Applicants for the Filipinx Student Wellbeing Conference: Youth Contingency must be currently enrolled or graduated from the Buong Loob: Filipinx Student Wellness Internship.
