Philippine Sun (13°N, 122°E) Unveiling: Sun Sala Dance Party

Friday, September 4, 2026, 6:00 PM
In-Person at Yerba Buena Gardens, East Garden - 140 3rd St, SF

You’re invited to the public unveiling of the latest light sculpture in SOMA Pilipinas: the Philippine Sun (13°N, 122°E) by Filipino artist collective mumu. The artwork’s illumination at night will be synchronized to the archipelago’s sunrise. This choreography of light transcends space and time, connecting the Filipino diaspora to the motherland’s natural rhythm—a luminous reminder of identity, of belonging, of home.

Presented in collaboration with Yerba Buena Conservancy, Yerba Buena Gardens, and  Yerba Buena Partnership, the Philippine Sun (13°N, 122°E) is the first Filipino cultural marker in Yerba Buena and invites local residents, workers, and visitors to enjoy the new Sun Sala, also featuring vinta sails inspired by our maritime heritage.

Join us on the dance floor, and be among the first to experience the artwork illuminated after sunset with performances, music, and dancing.

The Sun Sala celebrations are supported by the Svane Family Foundation.
This is the first of two Sunset Sala activities in collaboration with the Filipino Mental Health Initiative.

The Philippine Sun (13°N, 122°E) is funded by the California Arts Council, Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, Office of Economic Development, the San Francisco Arts Commission, Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy, and Yerba Buena Partnership.

Kapwa is Medicine - Motion Devotion and Poetry Practice

RESCHEDULED TO SUN, SEPT 13, 2026
In-Person at the Kalayaan Building - 457 Minna St, SF

Join us for a day of movement and poetry! 🔗

What should I expect from this gathering?
A movement arts practice shaped and embodied by way of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, as the foundation for grounding, self and spatial awareness as well as community care. Paired with a poetry workshop offered as an additional form of release and creative expression.

We will explore and blend together basic self defense techniques along with shared Filipina/x/o concepts as part of routine and ritual. Sprinkling in some reflection and writing, “rhyme and reason.” Look forward to discovering, remembering, building on the various strengths you already have access to from within. All levels (from 0 to any experience) welcome.
