The Filipino Mental Health Initiative of San Francisco (FMHI-SF) and Angela Angel are grateful to announce this upcoming series for those who have had history with or experience cancer, or those who have been caretakers of cancer survivors.

Registration is due Tues, October 15. The medicine kit contribution ask is $30, however, no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

LOVING OUR CELLS will take place in-person in San Francisco (specific location TBD) on the following Sundays from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM — October 20, November 3, November 17, and December 1. The first class on October 20 is MANDATORY.

​Filipinx Healer Workshop Series 2024 - Self Preservation and Community Connection

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
We hope to provide a shared space to offer learnings in self defense, self and community preservation through our platform/medium of martial arts/movement practices, with the intention to decolonize, dismantle toxic systems and destigmatize mental health within the art/sport, i.e. engaging in reflection, tapping into somatics, discussion and overall connection to ourselves and each other. The energy to fill the room is always co-conspired, therefore whoever engages with us in this way also contributes to the larger whole and our greater purpose to serve.

Light food and refreshments will be provided.

Filipinx Healer Workshop Series 2024 - Pwera Usog: Protection through Magic and Medicine

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
"Pwera Usog" is a blessing and saying in the Philippines to protect babies from unintended "bati" - an energetic transfer that can show up as a disturbance in their bodies This can be intentional or intentional. Through generations, the power of ritual, prayer, and sacred objects has served as a shield against unseen forces. For our session, we will walk together through some cultural practices, such as pausok, anting-anting, pagtatawas, sumbalik, Hilot and more. This is a space to remember, to honor, and to bring these protective traditions into our modern lives. We will do this respectfully and with protection. We will also refrain from doing any particular rituals while in session together.

Buong Loob: Filipinx Student Wellness Internship

The Filipino Mental Health Initiative-San Francisco, SFUSD's College & Career Readiness, and Buong Loob community are excited to announce two paid internship opportunities in Spring 2025 for high school students in SFUSD: Buong Loob: Filipinx Student Wellness Internship and the "Filipinx Student Wellbeing Conference: Youth Contingency" Internship. Established in 2021, the Buong Loob: Filipinx Student Wellness Internship, also referred to as Buong Loob, provides 10th/11th/12th grade high school students in SFUSD opportunities to learn about Filipina/o/x mental health and wellbeing through education, leadership, and community engagement. Through culturally relevant education and project-based learning, we aim to reduce mental health stigma and promote a supportive environment where students can thrive and support one another in their wellness journeys. We envision a future where Filipinx and Filipina/o/x American youth have access to culturally responsive mental health resources and support systems, enabling them to embrace their identities, cultivate resilience, and lead initiatives that enhance the well-being of their communities. We are excited to welcome our FIFTH cohort this spring 2025. "Filipinx Student Wellbeing Conference: Youth Contingency" Internship.

Established in 2022, the Filipinx Student Wellbeing Conference (FSWC) is an annual mental health education event for Filipino and Filipina/o/x American high school students in the San Francisco Bay Area. The event is planned, led and organized by youth leaders of the Youth Contingency Internship where they engage in community-based research to assess the wellness needs of their peers to plan the conference. The Filipinx Student Wellbeing Conference aims to provide a platform for discussions on Filipinx cultural values, identity, and mental health stigma, emphasizing the student experience. To apply for the Youth Contingency Internship, students must be current or former participants of the Buong Loob: Filipinx Student Wellness Internship, with the option to enroll in both programs simultaneously.

​WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This session is for parents, guardians and folx who envision a future raising children. We will explore the ways we reclaim our cultural practices and honor our inner wisdom as we envision our youth as future ancestors. Inherited wisdom can look like preparing atang when having family celebrations or laying of hands on a loved one to relieve them of pain. In this communal space, storytelling and compassionate dialogue will guide us as we strengthen our connection with those who came before, and the generations forward.
