My name is Ruth Christine Dimagmaliw, but you can call me “Ruth” or “Ruthie.” As a second-generation Filipina-American born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, I am deeply connected to my roots as a daughter of immigrants. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over a decade of experience in the mental health field. My professional journey includes working in diverse environments such as intensive in-home services, outpatient clinics, and school-based settings. Throughout my career, I have worked  with adults, youth, and
families from different walks of life. My experience includes supporting children of immigrants, community activists and organizers, neurodivergent youth, individuals in foster care or transitioning post-adoption, and system-involved youth.

When I’m not in the therapy room, I focus on networking with various organizations to enhance resource accessibility and foster community connections. I currently serve as the Community Engagement Director for Therapin*y, where I spearhead community outreach to health practitioners, healers, and organizations that strive to promote wellness within the Filipinx community. Additionally I coordinate events, networking with mental health professionals across the country, and provide speaking engagements and workshops to universities and organizations. My work is deeply rooted in creating positive social impact and driving sustainable change within communities. My passion for hearing people’s stories and understanding their diverse experiences continually inspires and guides my efforts with both clients and the broader community.

What does "mental health" mean to you? Why is it important for us as Filipinxs/Filipinx Americans to normalize discussions around wellness and mental health in our community?

Mental health is one part of our wellness that is necessary to tend to. Just as we attend preventative appointments to monitor our physical health, we should also regularly assess our mental wellness. For us as Filipinx-Americans, it is important to normalize discussions about mental health because it is deeply connected to our daily lives and cultural values. There are many ways to address mental health within our community beyond just attending therapy. I believe that therapy provides a valuable space for initiating these conversations.
